Family Over Everything
Edinson Volquez, a pitcher for the Kansas City Royals threw game one of the World Series on Tuesday Night, but did not know about the passing of his father that happened prior to the game. Volquez's family asked for the team to notify him after he was finished pitching in game one. Daniel Volquez, 63, of the Dominican Republic died due to heart complications. Royals Manager Ned Yost had to break the news to Volquez after the game. "It was just, you know, it was sad, a sad situation...You find out an hour before the game that your starting pitcher's father passed away and it was hard. But again, you wanted to honor the family's wishes, as they requested, 'Don't tell Eddie. Let him go out and pitch Game 1 of the World Series.' Volquez left the stadium immediately after he exited the game to be with family. "You could tell he was devastated", teammate Jeremy Guthrie said. "I had never seen him like that before. He was very quiet, very subdued, very quiet. I could tell he was in a lot of emotional pain." Volquez is currently with his family in the Dominican Republic.
